what are some good small dog breeds?

Posted on Sep 22, 2008 under 5 | 13 Comments

i have the yorkie and possibly the maltese. any suggestions?

There's a good quiz I took when trying to find my first dog, it's on animal planet.com, and this is how you get to it:

1. go to http://www.animal.discovery.com
2. On the bar select "Pets"
3 When the menu comes down select "Dog Breed Selector"
4. There are two options the "Dog Breed Selector" and "Dog Breed List" Go to Dog Breed Selector, and under that press "Start Your Search"

Or just go to this link, and start at #4:

Large dog breeds & stairs???

Posted on Sep 22, 2008 under Large Dog Breeds | 7 Comments

My fiance & I are moving in to a house with a set of stairs, and we will be getting a great dane puppy and a boxer puppy, but I was concerned if going up and down stairs would be harmful for the large breed puppies (causing hip dysplacia), or if it's difficult for them to go up and down when they are at full size? (When I think about it, I have never seen a great dane go up or down stairs) anyone own big dogs, and live in a house with stairs? What's your opinion?

I have a rott/choc lab mix (Bosco) and a pitbull. (Dosia) Bosco is 4 yrs old and already has hip problems. Dosia is 3, and luckily, has no problems. We have hardwood floors and stairs…Bosco has attempted the stairs a couple of times, but his back legs go out from under him easily, so he gave up. Dosia is more clumsy than anything, he can manage the stairs fairly easily, but due in part to his size, it can be a little tricky coming down. We prefer they don't go upstairs anyways, so on the occasions they seem to be determined to go, we put up a baby gate. Hip displaysia is genetic, occuring in most large breed dogs. You can start giving your puppy chondroitin and glucosamine, which can help with his joints. (we give our dogs treats that have it in them, but you can also buy it in pill form) Since Bosco has trouble with his hips, especially trying to scratch (usually at his collar) on the hardwood floors, we got him a little rug that he goes and sits on when he needs extra traction.

Personally, I don't think it really hurts them to climb stairs, but it does put extra strain on their joints, especially as they get older and heavier.

How do I train my dog to walk with me better?

Posted on Sep 20, 2008 under 8 | 6 Comments

I have a black lab who gets over-anxious when I walk her at first. She always wants to pull me and ends up choking herself. I bought a harness so she wouldn't choke anymore but I would like for her to "walk-nice" with me. What equipment or techniques could I use to help her?

all you need is a leash, collar and some REALLY good treats (think cut up chicken, hotdog, liver). you want to be the most interesting thing in the world to your dog. make walking with you the most fun thing every. start walking, and say "with me" or "walk nice" which ever command you are comfortable with. give the dog a treat, take a few more steps, give another treat. you want the dog looking up at you waiting for the next treat. if you lose the dogs attention (if he pulls on the leash, goes to sniff, etc.) STOP. no treats, no attention, no walking. just freeze like a statue. the second the dog turns to look at you (like "hey, why'd we stop?") and loosens the leash say "with me!" and give another treat. keep walking. repeat over and over.

this is a slow process and you won't get far your first few walks. you need to gradually reduce how often you are giving the treats. you might want to start in your backyard or living room so the dog gets the idea without all the distractions.

for an instant fix, the EZ-Walk harness made by gentle leader is very effective to stop pulling, but it doesn't train the dog to walk nice. might be worth getting until you have been able to work with her! good luck!

What is the quietest dog of the toy breeds (small dogs)?

I am getting a new puppy soon and I'm torn between a few different breeds. I want a dog under 10 lbs that is relatively quiet (not a big yapper). I know it's hard to find in a toy breeds. Give me some ideas on some great dogs that would do ideally in an apartment, by themself while I'm at work for a few hours and will not bother the neighbors with loud barking constantly while I'm away.

There is a dog that physically can't really bark…supposedly,it can make noise, but not bark.I've never heard it before, but it may be worth checking out.it's called a basenji, but i'm not sure how available they are. It's not a toy breed,it's a hound dog,but it doesn't get taller than 17" according to the breed standard.Check this out:

I want to add to my German Shepard and Tabby cat home. My German is High Energy, so I want a breed that is more laid back and good with people/other animals. But I want to stick with a large dog, no yappers!! Sorry, personal choice!

well as long as you dont get puppies you should be fine with any kind i got a german sheapard that was 2 years old and she was a very laid back dog. you could go with a bloode hound they are very good animals that are laid back and dont bark hardly ever

What drives B.J. really crazy???

Posted on Sep 20, 2008 under dog toys | 7 Comments

Here is my crazy dog again. He really is a character and I love him for that. Don’t worry he does not do this all the time. He can be left alone and does not touch anything in the house except for his dog toys. He is always supervised when he gets to go crazy.

Posted on Sep 18, 2008 under 8 | 6 Comments

She is a 3 year old yellow lab.

Here is a list of what she knows:
sit

come
shake
wave
crawl
play dead
fetch
up
say sorry(lays head between her paws)
get the morning paper
roll over
jump through a hoop
shes also my dads hunting dog

*dont have money for agility equipment
*dont want to teach her speak
Patrica. Thanks for the suggestion but the pointing fubger and going, "bang bang." is actualy how we get her to play dead. lol.

I'm in the process of teaching my beagle to jump up onto a bench and then off again.

Check out this site, it is so inspiring: www.silvia.trkman.net

Have fun :)

There are alot of large dog breeds out there that I don't even know about. My favorite large dog is an Irish Wolf Hound. Does anyone know any other large dog breeds? Please put in pictures as well.

English Mastiff, it's my favorite.

Do you know any small dog breeds?

Posted on Sep 18, 2008 under 5 | 13 Comments

My mom wants a small dog. But she doesn't like Chihuawa's, pugs, poodles, pomeranians, or yorkies. She just wants something really small, kind of like a dog that would fit in a purse.
She hates dogs that yip and bark all the time.
We don't WANT to put our dog in a purse, we just want the kind of dog that would be really small.

I have a papillon, they are really small about 5-6 pounds. They can bark, but if you squirt the dog with water it'll stop barkiing. They are soo cute when you give them a bath, not that they aren't any way.Go to papillonpups.com for some pics. They are SOOOOOOO cute and nice. if u are sittin down, they just sit down on you. Good Luck!
